Problem gambling rates among college-aged men vs older populations
Among young adults, problem gambling rates are higher in males than in females. It has been suggested that problem gambling could be a risk factor for suicide attempts. In this meta-analysis, we examine the relationship between problem gambling and suicide attempts among adults in Great Britain.
We conducted a systematic review of 104 studies. We identified a number of factors associated with problem gambling and suicidality, and we ranked them from most to least associated with problem gambling. We then summed up these risk factors and calculated their weighted mean odds ratios. These weighted mean odds ratios were used to rank the risk factors by their effect size.
The results showed that the odds ratios for attempting suicide were nine times higher for men with problem gambling than those with PGSI scores of 0. This suggests that problem gambling may be a major risk factor for suicide attempts. However, this relationship between problem gambling and suicide attempts was attenuated by impulsivity scores.
