On the Road
carthalis | August 7, 2010‘On the Road’ by Jack Kerouac is one of those books that I read as a teenager that it had a lasting effect on me. I was there on the trains traveling back and forth across the American landscape.
I ended up getting my hands on anything I could get by Jack Kerouac which in turn led me to other beat writers; William Burroughs and Howl by Allen Ginsberg. And Patti Smith’s cover of Howl was like a shaman waking the spirits. Nothing compares to seeing her perform live and I was very fortunate to see her perform live a number of years ago at the home of Virginia Woolf.
“We turned at a dozen paces, for love is a duel, and looked at each other for the last time.”
- Jack Kerouac, On the Road
“Holy flowers floating in the air, were all these tired faces in the dawn of Jazz America.”
- Jack Kerouac, On the Road
